Two main airports serve international flights into Puerto Plata, and both are conveniently located near the city’s most visited sites. Gregorio Luperon International Airport (POP), popularly known as the Puerto Plata International Airport, is the closest airport, located east of Puerto Plata city and west of Sosua.

The majority of visitors to northern Dominican Republic cities and towns such Cofresi, Luperon, Puerto Plata city, Playa Dorada, Sosua, and Cabarete enter the country through this port of entry.

It is served by airlines flying to and from the United States (American Airlines via JFK & Miami, Jet Blue via New York JFK, United via Newark, Delta Airlines seasonally via Atlanta, Ryan International via Minneapolis), Canada (Air Canada via Montreal & Toronto and Air Transat via Calgary & Montreal & Toronto & Vancouver), the Caribbean (SkyKing via Providenciales & Turks & Caicos), and Europe (Air Plus Comet via Madrid, Martinair via Amsterdam, Holland.

Airport Facts

It is located in one of the most significant provinces of the North region, and its opening was critical to the country’s tourism development. The AIGL has a 3,081 m x 46 m runway and can accommodate wide-body aircraft such as the Boeing 747 and Airbus A350. The terminal is 27,075 m2 in size and can accommodate up to 1,200 passengers per hour.

There are also several charter flights departing from cities like Calgary, Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver, Brussels, Helsinki, Reykjavik, Birmingham, London, Manchester, Milan, Paris, Shannon, Stockholm, and Zurich.

Because the list of scheduled airlines serving Puerto Plata Airport is always evolving, passengers planning to fly here should double-check with their home airlines to see if they provide flights to the destination.

Cibao International Airport (STI) in Santiago is a second option, located about an hour’s drive south of Puerto Plata city. US-bound flights make up the bulk of the traffic at this airport. JetBlue, Delta, and the three American Airlines hubs (New York, Miami, and American Eagle) all operate regularly scheduled service into STI (San Juan, Puerto Rico). Fort Lauderdale is where Spirit Airlines’ flights originate.

El Catey (AZS) in Samana is presently the closest airport. You’ll need about 2.5 hours to reach Puerto Plata from here. Several Canadian and European airlines, as well as Jet Blue’s service from JFK, offer flights to AZS.

If you’re heading to the north coast of the island, you shouldn’t fly into Punta Cana, which is on the opposite end of the island. A trip via bus could take anything from seven to ten hours.
